What The Bleach?!

FIDM supplied me with a roll of tan colored canvas to use for one of my project. I wanted to turn it white so thought I would bleach it to be the white I wanted. Now to give you some background I have never bleached fabric before nor did I have a big bucket to use so I decided to use my bathroom tub. Now don’t get ahead of me. I did test the fabric in the sink to make sure it won’t turn yellow first. It came out pure white so I went and purchased 3 ½ gallons of bleach to fill my tub and mix in my fabric. I added no water and let it sit in the tub for about 2 hours to make sure it was really white. As you can imagine I had to open every window in my house to clear out the bleach smell. Soon as it was really white and I tossed it in the wash on cold to clean out the bleach. When the washer buzzed I opened it and to my surprise the wash completely shredded my fabric. It turned into wet toilet paper. That’s right! WET TOILET PAPER! I was so upset I had to laugh. It was simply comical! After that I googled how to bleach

fabric and this is what I found

  • I would work outside the fumes are strong

  • Use water and bleach! Not pure bleach! 3 tablespoons Clorox Regular Bleach added to 1-gallon water (Yea I know! I used 3 ½ gallons of pure bleach..)

  • Soak time is LIMITED to 5 minutes!! NOT 2 hours!

  • Then wash

  • Soak fabric in hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes to prevent the bleach from continuing to act and damage fabric

  • Then wash again
