Flash Back Sundays #KatyTiz
I had been interning for a high-fashion luxury clothing company, as an assistant designer, when a stylist came in asking us to make a custom piece for his client, Katy Tiz. Easy to say I was a big fan! I loved her song "Whistle (while you work it)" and her new album was going to be launched later that month.
I had been doing pattern work, sewing, and cutting for the company for two months now. I have helped with clients and the designer's own collection in the past but this was him giving the material to me, telling me what they are looking for and I were to just go for it. I began draping and patterning till it was approved by the head designer.
Not going to lie I was really nervous but he wouldn't have given me this opportunity if he didn't think I could handle it...or at least that's what I told myself so I would get over my nerves. I was confident in what I showed to the head designer but there is always a chance they could hate it. I guess that is always the fear in the industry. One day you're on top of the world then the next you're drawing blanks and struggling to build a collection.
Soon as the head designer approved my design, I went to patterning then later moved onto cutting and sewing. I was putting in this work and still wasn't confirmed if she would actually be wearing the garment until she tried it on. Fast forward to June 10... I found out the stylist loved it for Katy Tiz and she performed live on the Today Show that morning. I was screaming on the inside with excitement! This was the first time a celebrity was actually wearing something I had designed. Now it wasn't all me, I learned so much from my co-workers on the internship. Of course, it was still under the head designers name and no one actually knew I made it but it was still an amazing feeling to see a famous singer from the UK wear something I designed. I felt so accomplished while I sat on the couch and watched her perform on TV and see all her posts in the top.
Sure to me now that seens like no big deal but that day it meant everything.
